Grand Theft Auto 6 is gearing up for its highly anticipated fall 2025 release, but there’s a catch: it’s launching exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, leaving PC gamers out in the cold. While this move aligns with Rockstar’s usual strategy, it’s raising eyebrows in 2025. With PC gaming becoming a powerhouse in the industry, is Rockstar missing a golden opportunity by skipping a PC launch?
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed this question in a recent interview with IGN, hinting that GTA 6 will eventually make its way to PC. “With Civ 7, it’s available on console, PC, and Switch right away,” Zelnick said, referencing Firaxis’ recently released Civilization 7. “But with other titles in our lineup, we don’t always launch on all platforms simultaneously. Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then expanded to others.”
This isn’t surprising to longtime Rockstar fans. The studio has a history of delaying PC releases for its biggest titles, from Red Dead Redemption 2 to GTA V. While PC gamers eventually get their hands on these games, the wait can be frustrating. With GTA 6’s fall 2025 release window locked in, it’s likely PC players won’t see the game until 2026 at the earliest.
In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer tried to explain the reasoning behind the delayed PC launch, urging fans to give the studio the “benefit of the doubt.” But with PC gaming accounting for a significant chunk of multiplatform game sales—sometimes up to 40% or more, according to Zelnick—the decision to skip a PC launch feels like a missed opportunity.
The gaming industry is currently in a weird spot. Sales of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S—the two consoles GTA 6 will launch on—have been declining. Meanwhile, Nintendo is gearing up to unveil the Switch 2, while Sony and Microsoft remain tight-lipped about their next-gen consoles. So, how long until we see the PlayStation 6 or the next Xbox?
Zelnick isn’t worried. He believes GTA 6 will be a massive driver of console sales, even in the face of declining numbers. “When you have a big title in the market—and we have many of them coming—historically, that has sold consoles,” he told IGN. “I think there will be a meaningful uptick in console sales in calendar 2025 because of the release schedule, not just from us, but from others as well.”
He also pointed to the growing importance of PC gaming, even as console sales dip. “We’ve seen PC become a much more significant part of what used to be a console business,” Zelnick said. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see that trend continue. Of course, there will be a new console generation.”
With GTA 6 on the horizon, many gamers are eyeing the rumored PlayStation 5 Pro as the ultimate way to experience the game. Dubbed by some as the “GTA 6 machine,” the PS5 Pro is expected to deliver enhanced performance. However, tech experts are tempering expectations, suggesting it might not run the game at 4K60. Still, for many, upgrading to the PS5 Pro will be worth it to dive into Rockstar’s next open-world masterpiece.
While the lack of a PC launch for GTA 6 is disappointing for some, Zelnick’s confidence in the game’s ability to boost console sales is hard to ignore. With its fall 2025 release, GTA 6 is poised to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time, and it could very well reignite interest in the current console generation.
For now, PC gamers will have to wait, but as history shows, Rockstar’s games are worth the patience. In the meantime, keep an eye on the PS5 Pro—it might just be your ticket to the ultimate GTA 6 experience.
